The Odawa Judo Club Inc. is a nonprofit organization - NPO, also known as a non-business entity. The judo club uses its surplus revenues to further achieve its purpose or mission, rather than distributing its surplus income to the organization's directors (or equivalents) as profit or dividends.

The origin of the judo club was started in 2008 by Sensei Derek (Dojoshu), who was then a sitting Director-at-large of Judo Ontario, as well as a member of the Aboriginal committee, when the Odawa Native Friendship Centre (ONFC) asked Judo Ontario if they would create a program serving the surrounding community, where the majority of the members would come from low-income families.

Upon realizing the judo club needed better equipment and training for its students, the club formed a board of directors, and incorporated in September 2009, in order to obtain regular grants, and private donations, which taxable receipts can be issued.

The judo club still remains within its primary purpose of remaining nonprofit, following its mission statement. The fees we charge are kept at a bare minimum in an effort of paying regular running costs, such as rent, marketing, and equipment, etc. When any surplus is made, 100% of it is kept within the club for upgrades, or used for bettering the training of its students.
